It is always a surprise to return home, à la maison, from the busy streets of London, travelling from Britain on buses, tubes and then on ferries, or by plane, or train to get to France.
Yup, we came to Paris "for a year" with our two boys (then 6 and 8) in 2021, but after a lot of shilly-shallying have ended up staying permanently and now have three boys, our youngest was born in spring 2022. My husband is French but had been in the UK for 20 years and fully expected to return and stay there, so it was all my fault! I really enjoy living here.
Yes, they were called Les Terre-Neuvas, and in this region there are still festivals, architecture, shrines that were all built around this trade and protecting the fishermen. Breton society also has an strong matriarchy as the women were alone, often working and managing the household.
I love this text that really gets to the heart of what it means to have two main languages. Keep on writing in your lovely maison française.
Thanks very much Judith. Two languages, two cultures.
Merci Marguerite. J’ai également hâte de partager d’autres ’posts’.
As someone who also came to France "for a year" I recognise a lot here!
Do you still live in France Victoria?

Very enjoyable. Amazing that fishermen used to go across to Canada from France
